Keynote 2 – Automation in Testing: Richard Bradshaw, Friendly Testing

In this talk Richard will introduce the concept of Automation in Testing. He will explain his reasoning for this new term over existing, mainly Test Automation. Exploring the industry’s view of automation and how this has guided the way automation is being used in testing. Contrasting this to his own experiences and his deep understanding of testing.

We will explore the new opportunities for automation that become so clear when you merge these views with new terminology. Focusing on how most common automation framework approaches can be utilised to provide tools that assist testing. He will share his experiences of where he has created automation specifically to assist his testing, not checking, testing.

About Richard: Richard is an experienced tester, consultant and generally a friendly guy. He shares his passion for testing through consulting, training and giving presentation on a variety of topics related to testing. He is a fan of automation that supports testing. With over 10 years testing experience, he has a lot of insights into the world of testing and software development.

Richard is a very active member of the testing community, the founder of multiple meetups in the UK, and also one of the founding members of the Midlands Exploratory Workshop on Testing (MEWT).

Richard blogs at thefriendlytester.co.uk and tweets as @FriendlyTester. He works for Friendly Testing, a provider of consultancy and training within testing. He can often be found in the bar, with a beer in hand, discussing testing.

Keynote 1 – Testing in the age of complexity: Bill Matthews, Target Testing

As testers we are often asked to testing complicated systems but the recent excitement around trends such as Machine Learning, Big Data and IoT (Internet of Things) is leading us down a path towards more and more complex systems. Imagine being asked to test a system that adapts based on the success or failure of previous behaviour or a system where the interactions between the different components leads to emergent behaviour rather than prescribed behaviour.

Complex Systems behave differently to Complicated Systems and generally need different approaches to testing however with much of our testing literature is geared towards testing complicated systems rather than complex systems we as testers are facing an interesting challenge over the next 10 years as the complexity of software increases at an accelerating pace.

In this Bill will explore the concept of modern complex and adaptive systems, the testing challenges they pose and based on his recent project work he will offer ideas on how we might approach testing such complex systems

STG 2016 – Glasgow, Wed 11 May

Our next event will be on the afternoon of Wednesday 11 May at the IET Teacher Building in central Glasgow. Two excellent (and in-demand) speakers that I’ve been trying to get for some time – Bill Matthews who specialises in security testing and Richard Bradshaw whose particular area of interest is effective use of automation in testing. More details of the sessions themselves to follow shortly.
